Community Interaction Program
ENVIRONMENT CANADA AND THE MINISTÈRE DU DÉVELOPPEMENT DURABLE, DE L’ENVIRONNEMENT ET DES PARCS DU QUÉBEC AWARD $402,500 IN GRANTS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS

Quebec City, May 18, 2005 – The Honourable Stéphane Dion, the Minister of the Environment of Canada, and Thomas J. Mulcair, the Minister of the Ministère du Développement durable, de l’Environnement et des Parcs du Québec, announced today that a total of 402,500 dollars will be awarded under the Community Interaction Program to help community organizations to implement sixteen environmental projects.

These grants will be spent to implement tangible projects by the communities along the River to improve public awareness, protection, development projects and public access. They will also help to promote accessibility and renewed use of the River,” said Minister Dion. “The efforts made by the communities along the river to protect the St. Lawrence clearly illustrate the importance they place on the environment in which they live,” he added.

These projects, which aim to ensure that the St. Lawrence is used in a way that respects this great natural resource, are concrete examples of sustainable development that promote the commitment of communities along the River to protecting this important ecosystem. Managing resources responsibly, working to clean up the environment, stimulating economic and regional development are all different ways to improve the quality of life and sustainable development,” said Minister Mulcair.

Community Interaction is a joint program of the governments of Canada and Quebec. The program is linked to the protection of the St. Lawrence ecosystem and provides technical as well as financial support for the implementation of environmental projects proposed by the communities. This program aims mostly the support primarily the implementation of community projects devised as part of Ecological and Rehabilitation Action Plans (ERAP) developed jointly by the Zones d’intervention prioritaire (ZIP) [areas of prime concern] committees and people in the community. The projects that are implemented under this program bear witness to the considerable efforts made in various areas along the St. Lawrence to grapple with a host of environmental problems.
