Québec authorizes Hydro-Québec’s proposed Appalaches-Maine interconnection line |
| Québec City, April 14, 2021 – Jonatan Julien, Québec’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Côte-Nord and Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine Regions, and Benoit Charette, Minister of the Environment and the Fight Against Climate Change, Minister Responsible for the Fight Against Racism and Minister Responsible for the Laval Region, are pleased to announce that the Québec Government has authorized Hydro-Québec to proceed with the proposed Appalaches-Maine interconnection line in the territories of the Appalaches and Granit regional county municipalities (RCMs). The order-in-council authorizing the project was adopted by the Cabinet on April 7 last. The project has already been subjected to the environmental assessment procedure led by the Bureau d'audiences publiques sur l'environnement (BAPE), and the report was published last December. The order issued by the Ministère de l'Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques is a crucial step in the completion of the large-scale Appalaches-Maine interconnection line. In moving forward, the Québec Government has consolidated its status as the green battery of northeastern North America. Electrification is a core element of the Plan for a Green Economy, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and serving as a major economic lever for Québec. The purpose of the new interconnection line is to increase the exchange capacity between Québec and New England. The new line will connect to the New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC) transmission line to be built in the State of Maine. The project will allow Hydro-Québec to increase its electricity exports, for the benefit of Québecers. It will also play a role in the effort to fight climate change, by providing renewable energy to the States of Maine and Massachusetts.
