2022 Annual Air Quality Index Statistics by Sector

Air quality varied widely among the 17 urban sectors that make up the AQI. In 2022, the percentage of “poor”* air quality days ran from 1% in Lévis–Parc Georges-Maranda to 16% in Rouyn-Noranda–Centre-Ville.

In overall terms, the respective average AQI “good,” “acceptable” and “poor” proportions of days were 53%, 43% and 4%. Compared to the previous year, results in the “good” and “acceptable” categories rose by 1% to the detriment of results in the “poor” category.

Of note, contrary to regional statistics that are essentially based on the measurement of homogenous fine particulates and ozone, sectorial statistics can take account of local contaminants not seen on a regional scale. As a consequence, the AQI in any given sector may differ from the region in which it is located.

Local sources of air emissions affecting the AQI in a given sector vary from place to place.

*Occurs when the concentration of at least one of the contaminants used to calculate the AQI exceeds its hourly reference value.
